"Be yourself, everyone else is already taken."
[As cliché and redundant as this sounds] it is so important that we remain true to ourselves at all times. Who we choose to become [whether ourselves or someone else] will determine our livelihood and impact. Living a life trying to follow the latest and greatest, is like living a life chasing smoke, because the parameters of what that is changes every day. We don't have to try to be someone else nor do we need to try to be different; we are already made different. There is so much we have to discover about ourselves and what we can do that wasting that energy on anything else is a waste of potential.
I'm sure by now you've seen the pictures all over social media from Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson's wedding celebration in New Orleans over the weekend. I don't love Solange Knowles wedding outfits simply because she looks good in them, or because they're unique or trendy; sure those are some really good reasons. But I always tell my clients anyone can look good in the right clothing. What makes the difference is when the clothing is an expression your style. I admire Solange Knowles for remaining true to her style even on a day that forces many to conform to traditional stereotypes.
For those of us who have followed the music scene in the past decade, we would remember when Solange Knowles first came out as an artist, it seemed like they were trying to mold her into a mini Beyonce. But if you've watched her career over the past couple of years, I'm sure we could agree when she finally found her voice, it made all the difference. Her confidence, eclectic style and indie sound... she is obviously in her element.
Don't deprive the world of what you have to offer!
