The end of one year and the start of another always seems to evoke continuous reflection, typically resulting in new resolutions and all that new year hooplah, to the point of being cliche. But please indulge me for a moment as I shamelessly take part in it.
I had so many expectations for last year. 2014 was supposed to be one for the books; the year that something spectacular or amazing came my way. I ended up having the most ordinary, difficult and uneventful year ever. I think I figured out why...
My plans for the year were just that, ordinary and uneventful. Difficulty and challenges are bound to happen. But if you're busy doing 'big' things and making things happen, they just become hurdles you need to cross to gain momentum and get closer to the finish line. As you can imagine, I stepped it up this year. When I took a look at where I want to be in 5, 10 and 20 years [20 year plan post coming soon...], I realized I had a lot of work to do! If your plans are not a little scary and exciting all at the same time, you're playing it safe.
I would like to challenge you this year to...
1. Reach for the stars
Evaluate the plans you made and ask yourself "Can I do more? Can I add to the list? Am I settling?" If you answered 'yes' to anyone of these or if you feel some discomfort, you might wanna consider going over the list. The point is not to set unrealistic goals but to push yourself.
Aim a little higher this year; go for what you really want rather than settle for what you think you can achieve, coz you'll only know your capacity when you keep pushing the boundaries.
2. And really reach for them
Resolutions are only cliche if you make the same each year and never follow through. Let your main resolution this year be to really reach for those stars and not let anything stop you. Don't let distractions steal your attention, or difficulty water down your passion.
And even if you don't quite make it to the stars this year, at least you would've made it to the clouds. And next year you can aim for the moon.
